When can gamers expect to wield the ol' laser blade in KOTOR II? Mike Gallo: Well, since it's an RPG, and the lightsaber is one of the most powerful weapons in the game (and Galaxy), we have to treat it as a very special item. IGN: It took a while to get your first lightsaber in KOTOR. You will run into other characters with lightsabers of course, but the colors aren't really tied to anything specific. IGN: What can the color of an enemy NPC's lightsaber tell you about him/her? Mike Gallo: Obviously the color red is a traditional color of Dark Jedi or Sith Lords, but those guys aren't really subtle anyway. On the flip side, we've also enhanced the effectiveness of fighting with a single lightsaber - That combat style is also a very viable option in KOTOR II. Therefore, the double-bladed lightsaber is most effective if you have few, but very powerful lightsaber upgrades because it makes the most of them. IGN: Are double-edged lightsabers treated any differently this time out? Kevin Saunders: As with the original KOTOR, double-bladed lightsabers work as double weapons and are similar to fighting with a weapon in each hand. IGN: Are there any new colors added this year? Mike Gallo: There are several new colors to choose from including silver, orange and a light green IGN: Will there be any new ways to acquire lightsaber crystals this time out? Mike Gallo:You mean other than from inside dead animals? There are several ways to acquire crystals, some of them will be quest related, and of course you may still find them in certain "special" areas. These upgrades can be found throughout the game, but, using skills, can also even be created! There are more than 60 possible lightsaber upgrades, yielding over ten million possible combinations. Lightsabers can also be upgraded with new power cells, emitters, and lenses. The bond is so great that the crystal's capabilities and color even vary with its master's alignment towards the light or dark side of the Force. There are even rumors of an exceedingly rare type of crystal that bonds with its owner, becoming more powerful as they do. The types of advantages provided by crystals are more varied than those of KOTOR. Ranging from the modest Adegan crystal to the coveted Ankarres Sapphire, most of the new crystals are straight from the Star Wars universe. Have you added new crystals for the sequel and if so, can you give us their names and properties? Kevin Saunders: We have added over a dozen new lightsaber crystals, many of which are more potent than those in the first KOTOR. IGN: In the first KOTOR, you could use some crystals to change the properties of your saber.
